GacoFlex E-5388 is a two component water based epoxy.
A general purpose corrosion inhibitive primer designed for metal roofs. GacoFlex E-5388 may also be used as masonry block filler. It adheres well to most metals, polymeric coatings, masonry and vitreous surfaces.
Not intended for continuous exterior use.
Good solvent, fair acid, excellent alkali resistance.
Cures to form a hard lusterless coating material. However, approximately 7 days at 60°F to 80°F (16°C to 27°C) is required to achieve maximum hardness.
Approximately 7% of the volatiles are solvents. Consequently, some ventilation is required. Part B contains a polyamide resin which is non-sensitizing; however, care should be taken to thoroughly clean with soap and water any skin areas that are contacted by GacoFlex E-5388. Undiluted vinegar is very effective in neutralizing coating that contacts the skin. If the coating should get in the eye, flush with water and call a physician.
Excellent adhesion to most surfaces. Most coating materials have excellent adhesion to GacoFlex E-5388.
When reduced one pint of water per gallon of mixed GacoFlex E-5388 and applied to smooth metal, the coverage is one gallon per 200 to 250 square feet (3.78L / 18.6 to 23.2 m²). When used unreduced as a block filler, the coverage is one gallon per 70 to 100 square feet (3.78 L / 6.5 to 9.3 m²).
183.4 grams per liter
Above 200°F (93°C) T.O.C.
One year. Protect from freezing in shipment and storage.
Thin with water. Clean up with water supplemented with soap or a small quantity of vinegar. GacoFlex T-5130 Thinner and Cleaner is recommended for both cleaning and drying spray equipment in order to avoid corrosion.
Mix one volume of Part A with one volume of Part B. Mix thoroughly. Power mixing recommended for quantities over two gallons (7.57 L).
The pot life is 1½ hours at 75°F (24°C). This can be extended to 2 hours by thinning with water to achieve the original consistency. Pot life at 55°F (13°C) is doubled, but at 100°F (38°C) it is reduced to 45 minutes.
For application to smooth surfaces, add one pint of water per gallon of GacoFlex E-5388. Use a ½ “ or ¾ “ (1.27 cm or 1.90 cm) nap roller or nylon brush.
Use long nap (1” to 1 ¼ “ (3cm to 4cm)) rollers when GacoFlex E-5388 is used as a block filler for porous concrete. If blow holes form as the primer dries, make a second pass with a relatively dry roller. Allow 5 to 10 minutes between pass.
GacoFlex E-5388 can be applied by spray. Thin with water at a rate of one pint per gallon and apply by airless spray. Flush equipment with a solution of vinegar and water (1 part vinegar to 3 parts water). Recycle clean solvent through equipment to dry free of water vinegar solution and to prevent corrosion.
Do NOT apply to surfaces which are below 50°F (10°C) or above 110°F (43°C) unless special instructions are secured from Gaco Western.
Acrylic, Polyurethane, and Hypalon coatings can be applied over GacoFlex E-5388 as soon as it is thoroughly set. This degree of dryness is normally achieved in two to three hours. Neoprene should not be applied directly to GacoFlex E-5388 until it has cured overnight. Where maximum solvent resistance is needed, apply two coats a minimum of two hours apart. Let cure for two days with a daily maximum temperature of 70°F (21°C) or higher. For 60°F (16°C) days, allow one week. All GacoFlex elastomers and most commercial paint will adhere well to cured GacoFlex E-5388 films up to one month old, provided that the surface is clean and free of chalk.
