Case Study - The Golden Domes

"We are very happy that we made the investment in Gaco Western products." - Facilities Manager

Problem: A domed polyurethane roof recoat in a metallic gold color.

Solution: Gaco Western UA-65 coating, specially formulated in gold.

The Golden Domes of Pure Knowledge at the Maharishi International University provide meditation space for several hundred followers each morning. The sparkling metallic gold domes are a local landmark, visible for miles around. Gaco Western's soil resistant coatings keep the bright gold domes glinting in the sunlight.

The two domes, one for men and one for women, have over 50,000 feet of insulating polyurethane foam covering each roof. Gaco Western UA-65 was selected to provide durable, fire-retardant roof coating. First, both roof surfaces were power-washed to remove any dirt or grime. Some areas that were damaged during the removal of old topcoat required sanding and caulking with urethane caulk.

The surface was then primed with Gaco Western's urethane undercoat. GacoFlex UB-64, urethane base coat, was applied by roller over the primer. Finally, both roof domes were coated with GacoFlex UA-65, a soil resistant, color retentive, polyurethane coating. The metallic gold UA-65 top coat was brushed over the domes. The Maharishi domes were completed in 1980.

Maharishi University continues to rejuvenate the domes by recoating every 10 years. The domes continue to be leak-free nearly 20 years later.

Facilities Manager Hraha, is very pleased with the Gaco Western roof coating system. He said, "We are very happy that we made the investment in Gaco Western products. We have tried other coatings at half the price, and have had to tear off the roof due to cracks and leaks."
