GacoFlex Pattern Deck Urethane Rubber Coating For Roller Application On Plywood And Concrete Decks

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.1 SUMMARY

1. This section describes the requirements for furnishing and installing a liquid applied waterproof, wear surface for deck surfaces over occupied space. Its intended use is suitable for residential and commercial foot traffic, patio furniture and similar equipment. This specification is not intended for use over on grade concrete.

1.2 RELATED SECTIONS

1.3 SUBMITTALS

1. Product Data: Submit manufacturers standard submittal package including specification, installation instructions, and general information for each waterproofing material.
2. Applicator Qualifications: Submit current "Qualified Applicator" certificate from the specified waterproofing manufacturer.

1.4 QUALIFICATIONS

1. Primary waterproofing materials shall be products of a single manufacturer. Secondary materials shall be recommended by the primary manufacturer. Manufacturer shall have a minimum of 10 years experience in the manufacture of materials of this type.
2. Applicators shall have a minimum of 5 years experience in the application of waterproofing materials of the type specified. Applicator shall possess a current "Qualified Applicator" certificate from the specified waterproofing manufacturer.
3. Pre-Bid Conference: 10 working days prior to bid opening there is to be a mandatory Pre-Bid Conference. Anyone not attending the Pre-Bid Conference will not be allowed to bid the project. All products considered an equal to the specified product or any changes in the scope of work installation or specifications must be presented at the Pre-Bid Conference. If a change in the specifications is accepted, it will be considered as an alternate and will be presented as a bid amendment issued 5 working days prior to the bid opening. No other changes to specification or bid documents will be accepted.
4. Pre-Installation Conference: Just prior to commencement of the fluid application waterproofing system, meet at the site with a representative of the coating manufacturer, the waterproofing contractor, the general contractor, the architect and other parties affected by this section. Review methods and procedures, substrate conditions, scheduling and safety.

1.5 DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING

1. Store all coating materials in the original unopened containers at 50° - 80°F (10°-26°C) until ready for use.
2. Follow the special handling or storage requirements of the manufacturer for cold weather, hot weather, etc.
3. Safety: Refer to all applicable data, including, but not limited to MSDS sheets, PDS sheets, Product labels, specific instructions for specific personal protection requirements.
4. Ventilation: Provide adequate ventilation to prevent the accumulation of hazardous fumes during application.
5. Environmental requirements: Proceed with work of this section only when existing and forecasted weather conditions will permit the application to be performed in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations.

1.6 WARRANTIES

A five-year no-leak warranty by the qualified applicator is available for commercial projects only. Systems applied in accordance with this specification will withstand substrate movement up to 1/32" (.8 mm) without cracking. Contractor must be eligible for, and make application to, Gaco Western, Inc., prior to the start of work under this section.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2.1 MANUFACTURERS

1. Acceptable Manufacturer:
   • Gaco Western, Inc.

2.2 MATERIALS

1. Primer/Sealer: Gaco Western Urethane Concrete Primer U-5677 and GacoFlex two component Epoxy Concrete Sealer E-5320.
   Alternative Primer/Sealer: Gaco Western Zero VOC Primer/Sealer E-5481 two component 100% solids Epoxy Concrete Primer/Sealer.
2. Urethane Base Coating: GacoFlex UB-64 Series two component coating.
3. Urethane Top Coating: GacoFlex U-66 Series two component coating.
4. Flashing and Joint Reinforcing Fabric: Gaco Western 66B and 66S fabric. GacoFlex NF-621 neoprene sheet flashing, and related materials as required for flashing drains, base angles, etc. Consult Gaco Western GW-1-2 for specific recommendations.
5. Granule: GacoShell, a hard (90 Rockwell Scale) non-crushable, non-extractable organic granule with a specific gravity of 1.3 Size 18 on 40 (1 mm on .42 mm) unless otherwise specified.
6. Misc. Accessories: All items incorporated into this system shall be compatible with and approved by the coating manufacturer.
   Note: Allow additional material for rough or irregular surfaces add 2% - 3% for material loss during application.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1 EXAMINATION

1. Verify that substrate is ready to receive work, surface is clean, dry and free of substances which could affect bond.
2. Verify that the plywood shall conform to U.S. Product Standard PS 1-92 and shall carry the grade trademark of the American Plywood Association Grades APA BC EXT or APA AC EXT are acceptable. These are minimum grades suitable for liquid coating applications. Refer to General Instruction Section GW-2-3 for complete information on the installation and fastening of plywood.
3. Do not begin work until concrete substrate has cured 28 days, minimum.
4. Verify that the concrete meets the requirements of the coating manufacturer. Refer to General Instruction Section GW-2-1 for complete information on the installation and finishing of concrete.
5. Verify that all other work involved with this area, done under other sections, has been completed and accepted by the architect and general contractor prior to starting the waterproofing application.

3.2 PREPARATION

1. Clean substrate to remove any and all surface contaminants. Refer to Gaco Western's General Instruction Section GW 1-1, Surface Preparation.
2. Mask off all adjoining areas that are not to receive the fluid applied waterproofing.
3. Provide a suitable work station to mix the coating materials.

3.3 INSTALLATION

1. Technical Advice: The installation of this waterproofing membrane shall be accomplished in the presence of, or with the advice of the manufacturer's technical representative. Contact the nearest regional office for assistance.
2. Concrete Primer/Sealer: Prime entire deck surface and all vertical or sloping surfaces of curbs, cants, parapets, etc., which are to receive coatings with one coat GacoFlex U-5677 Sealer at a rate of one gallon per 300 square feet (3.78 L / 30 m2). Allow to dry a minimum of 1 hour and no more than 72 hours before applying sealer coat.
   Apply one coat of GacoFlex E-5320 by roller at the rate of ½ gallon per 100 square feet (2 L / 10 m2). Allow to dry a minimum of 24 hours. For maximum solvent resistance, see drying time directed in Gaco Western's General Instructions GW-2-2. Alternative Concrete Primer/Sealer: Apply one coat of Gaco Western's E-5481 to all surfaces to receive the fluid applied waterproofing, except areas previously caulked, flashed or fabric reinforced. Apply at a rate of one gallon per 150 sq. ft. (3.78 L / 15 m2) and allow to cure at least 6 hours, but no more than 3 days before applying the basecoat.
3. Metal Primer: Prime Metal surfaces according to Gaco Western's Primer Recommendation Chart. Note: New, clean and dry plywood does not need a primer.
4. Taping: Apply UB-64 or U-66 urethane by brush or roller in a five to six inch (13 cm to 15 cm) wide strip coat centered over all joints, cracks and changes of plane to be taped. While this coat is still tacky, unroll 66B tape into the coating and apply a coat of urethane over the tape smoothing out wrinkles and fishmouths.
   Allow to cure a minimum of 1½ hours before proceeding to next step. On plywood substrates, taping application will require approximately 1/3 to 1/2 gallon per 100 square feet (1.3 to 2 L / 10 m2.) of urethane coating.
5. Urethane Base Coat: Apply one coat of Gaco Western's UB-64 or U-66 Series Urethane at a rate of 1.5 gallons per 100 sq. ft (6.2 L / 10 m2), (24 mils wet (.61 mm)) to all areas to receive fluid applied waterproofing, including areas previously caulked, flashed or fabric reinforced. Allow the base coat to cure completely (8 hours minimum at 70°F (22°C)).
6. Intermediate Coat with GacoShell and Pattern Release Tape: Using GacoFlex 66R release tape lay out pattern desired with tabs folded in tape. Keep the tape to 3-foot (.9 m) lengths for easy removal. Tape pull-tabs should be pulled away from you. Apply U-66 urethane by roller to secure a minimum coverage of one gallon per 100 square feet (3.78 L / 10 / m2). (Total wet film thickness - 16 mils (.4 mm)). While coating is still wet, broadcast GacoShell at approximately 6 to 8 pounds per 100 sq. ft. (2.7 kg to 3.6 kg / 10 m2)(one gallon dry volume (3.78 L dry volume)). Coat and sprinkle small areas at a time, taking care not to overlap coating and granule at edges. While coating is still wet, pull the pattern release tape. When texture coat is cured enough to walk on, lightly sweep away loose granule. If granule gets wet from rain allow 2 days of drying weather before proceeding with finish coat.
7. Finish Coat: Apply U-66 urethane by roller in a coat of the desired color over the GacoShell granule at the minimum rate of 1.25 gallons per 100 square feet (5.1 L / 10 m2). The granule must be totally encapsulated by this finish coat. (Total wet film thickness - 20 mils (.5 mm)).
8. Optional Topcoat: After finish coat has cured a minimum of 24 hours, apply the UA-60 aliphatic urethane topcoat by roller at a minimum rate of 1/2 gallon per 100 square feet (2 L / 10 m2). Allow 48 hours before deck is put into use. In cool temperatures, a longer curing time may be required.

3.4 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL

1. The contractor for work under this section shall maintain a quality control program specifically to verify compliance with this specification. A daily log shall be kept to record actions in the field.
2. Inspections: A minimum of three (Substrate, Application and Final) inspections, by an approved manufacturers representative, will be required on all projects requiring a warranty.
3. Thickness: Minimum over all dry film thickness of the completed fluid applied waterproofing, excluding GacoShell will average 45 mils (1.1mm). Thickness including GacoShell will average approximately 51 mils (1.3 mm). The optional topcoat will add approximately 5 mils (.1 mm) of urethane rubber to the system.
