GacoFlex Acrylic Elastomeric Wall Coating System

This specification provides an colorful, elastomeric coating system for exterior vertical surfaces such as fascias, mansards and walls. It is tough, elastic and unaffected by heat, cold or rapid changes in temperature. The system can be applied over exterior plywood, concrete, exterior insulation and finish systems (EIFS), plaster, cement composite board, metal and masonry building exteriors. The Gacoflex acrylic elastomer effectively covers the profiles of textured substrates, hairline cracks and repaired areas. This ability to uniformly cover surfaces provides moisture resistance, soil resistance and prevention of spalling.

This specification is prepared in a brief form so that it can be incorporated in the finish section of the building specification. The architect should consider securing a reference sample of the full system from the selected applicator.

1. GENERAL

  1. Substrates:
    1. Plywood shall be EXT APA A-C, EXT APA B-C, or EXT APA C-C plugged. It shall be installed with non-rusting annular or spiral thread nails. All joints shall be supported and edges shall be in moderate contact.
    2. Concrete or plaster shall be smooth and free from voids or sharp projections. Plaster shall be firmly bonded. Mortar joints on concrete block shall be neatly tuck pointed or flush without projection.
    3. Exterior insulation and finish systems must be sound without physical damage, blisters, delaminations or splits.
    4. Cement composite board shall be installed without cracking, with edges in moderate contact. All joints shall be supported.
    5. Metal surfaces shall be free from rust and scale.
    6. All window and doorframe transitions shall be caulked.
  2. Upon removal of all loose debris, entire surface is to be pressure washed with high pressure water spray.

Surfaces shall be dry and free from paint, asphalt, curing compounds or other foreign deposits. The surface shall be carefully inspected by the applicator and accepted prior to work.

2. MATERIALS

All products listed are manufactured, supplied or approved by Gaco Western, Inc. Any material not listed must be approved prior to application.

  1. Primer:
    1. Plywood, plaster, EIFS, cement composite board, smooth concrete - none required.
    2. Concrete block and other surfaces requiring filling - Gacoflex E-5320 epoxy wall primer at one gallon per 70 to 100 square feet (4.1 L/7 to 10 m2).
    3. Metal: Steel, aluminum and galvanized steel, Gacoflex E-5320; copper Gacoflex U-5677. Apply at one gallon per 300 square feet (4.1 L/30 m2).
  2. Base Coating: Gacoflex A-3211 acrylic emulsion elastomeric coating.
  3. Top Coat: Gacoflex A-32 acrylic emulsion elastomer top coat, color (color to be selected). If no color stated, bids will be based on white. Other colors may cost slightly more.
  4. Caulking: Use SIKA FLEX type Sikaflex-1A one component, non-sag, elastomeric polyurethane sealant or equivalent.
  5. Other Materials Required: Thinner, tapes, etc. shall be supplied or approved by Gaco Western.

3. APPLICATION OF COATINGS

Applicator shall apply a field test on a small inconspicuous area of the building surface to determine the best coverage rate to achieve color uniformity and mil thickness, as well as to determine application technique. Obtain architects or owners agent approval of appearance prior to proceeding with the general application of materials.

  1. General:
    1. Primer: Apply primer according to 2.1.
    2. Tape plywood joints and concrete cracks in accordance with General Instructions GW-1-2.
  2. Base Coat: Apply one coat of A-3211 acrylic emulsion elastomer at the rate of ¾ of a gallon per 100 square feet (3.1 L/10 m2).

NOTE: Application rates will need to be increased depending upon surface texture and porosity of the substrate. Allow additional material for substrates with a heavy texture, grooved design or recessed mortar joints. Topcoat can be applied as soon as the base coat is dry.
  3. Top Coat: Apply Gacoflex A-3200 series coating at the rate of ¾ of a gallon per 100 square feet (3.1 L/10 m2).
  4. Field Quality Control:
    1. The finished dry film thickness shall measure a minimum of 10 mils (.25 mm) with an average of 12 dry mils (.3 mm).
    2. There shall be no exposed substrate, blisters, pinholes or membrane defects of any kind after system is completed.
  5. Approval of Work:
    1. Upon substantial completion of the installation, applicator shall request an inspection from the owner or architect.
    2. Applicator shall make changes or corrections requested by owner or architect that are deemed necessary to meet the quality of workmanship and performance required by this specification.
